A tree is the tallest living

Mon, 07/25/2011 - 10:42

A tree is the tallest living thing on earth.  Some trees live for hundreds, if not thousands of years.  It is reported that a tree called Great Basin Bristlecone Pine (Methuselah) Pinus longaeva lived for 4,844 years.

Trees play a significant role in the eco system.  They produce oxygen that the humans and animals need.

Trees also define the landscape and protect soil from erosion.  They also absorb the heat, carbon dioxide and dust particles from the atmosphere and provide shelter to animals.  Trees also store hundreds of liters of water.

The different parts of a tree are roots, trunk, bark, branches, twigs, buds, leaves, needles, flowers, cones and seed.

A bark is the tough outer covering of a trunk or stem, which connects the roots to a network of branches called crown.  Branches transport water and minerals to the leaves. The tips of branches are called twigs while the part of twigs that keep on growing are called buds.

Leaves grow on the twigs and produce food for the whole tree through a process called photosynthesis.  With photosynthesis, leaves use energy from the sun to convert carbon dioxide in the air and water from the soil into sugars to feed the tree.

The roots hold the tree firmly in place. Roots draw water and minerals from the ground to the tree.

Flowers or cones hold fertilized seeds which are important for reproduction.
