Jose Rizal, as a writer has left several literary masterpieces that are now considered cultural heritage of the Philippines. Among these works are Noli Me Tangere (1887), El Filibusterismo (1891), Ultimo Adios (1896) and Guillermo Tell (1886). Dapitan, where Rizal was put in exile for nearly four years, prior to his execution in Manila, was declared as the first Heritage Zone of the country by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP).
